A rancher client of mine keeps two supplement drawers in her tack room — one labeled “the vet stuff” and one labeled “the other stuff.” She isn’t wrong that a divide exists. What she’s missing is that most of what’s in both drawers was chosen by someone with a DVM after their name.

“Holistic” and “conventional” aren’t opposing licenses. They’re two decision styles inside the same profession, and once you understand what each one is actually optimizing for, the drawer question mostly answers itself.

The dog that made me stop using the word “natural” as a selling point

I worked a nine-year-old Border Collie named Scout who herded on a hobby farm three mornings a week. Her owner had switched her to a turmeric-and-boswellia blend because a holistic-leaning vet recommended it after Scout started hesitating at the loading ramp of the stock trailer — a five-inch step she’d cleared without pause for years. Six weeks in, the hesitation hadn’t changed. When I examined her, I found bilateral hip discomfort on extension and a stiff, short-strided trot after rest that eased once she warmed up. That pattern reads as early osteoarthritis, not just normal aging stiffness. We added a glucosamine/chondroitin product with a documented dose and reassessed at eight weeks. Scout was back on the ramp without breaking stride by week six of the new plan. One dog, one season — not proof of anything beyond what I watched happen in front of me.

What each side is actually weighing

A conventional pick leans on the dose-response literature first. If a randomized trial measured 20 mg/kg of an omega-3 blend against a placebo and found a statistically significant change in a validated pain score, that’s the number a conventional-leaning vet reaches for. The upside is traceability: you can point to the study, the dose, and the endpoint. The downside is that veterinary trials are often small, short, and sponsor-funded, and a lot of the ingredients holistic practitioners favor simply haven’t been run through that pipeline yet — absence of a trial isn’t the same as absence of effect, it just means nobody’s paid to look.

A holistic pick leans on mechanism and clinical pattern-matching — how an ingredient behaves in the body, extrapolated from human data, in vitro work, or case experience, then applied cautiously to the individual dog in front of them. That’s a legitimate clinical tool. It’s also where the risk of overreach lives, because mechanism plausibility isn’t the same as a measured outcome in dogs.

Take glucosamine and chondroitin, the most-argued supplement pair in canine orthopedics. A 2017 review of the veterinary evidence on PubMed: glucosamine and chondroitin use in canines for osteoarthritis found results across studies were heterogeneous — some trials showed meaningful improvement in pain and weight-bearing scores, others showed none, and oral bioavailability for both compounds is genuinely poor, roughly 12% for glucosamine and closer to 5% for chondroitin sulfate. A conventional-minded vet will cite that inconsistency and hedge the recommendation. A holistic-minded vet will point to the mechanism — cartilage matrix support — and the individual dogs who’ve responded, and keep prescribing it anyway. Both positions are defensible. Neither is complete on its own.

The label doesn’t care which camp picked it

Here’s the part both camps under-discuss: manufacturing quality is a separate axis from ingredient philosophy entirely, and it matters more than either side likes to admit. The National Animal Supplement Council runs a quality seal program that, per its own criteria and reporting summarized by PetMD, requires member companies to pass independent audits roughly every two years and submit to random product testing against label claims. Crucially, that seal verifies manufacturing process and label accuracy — it does not verify that the ingredient works for a given condition. A NASC-listed joint chew and an unlisted one can contain the identical compound; the seal only tells you the label is honest about what’s inside the capsule.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements makes a version of the same distinction for human products in its consumer guidance on dietary supplements: third-party certification programs confirm identity, potency, and purity, but they explicitly do not confirm a product is safe or effective for any individual. That distinction carries straight over to the pet aisle, where oversight is even thinner than it is for human supplements. I tell owners this every time: check the seal for honesty, then check the dose for evidence — those are two different questions, and skipping either one leaves you guessing.

Where the two camps actually converge, and where I still land

A 2024 review in the Journal of Small Animal Practice on current evidence for non-pharmaceutical, non-surgical treatments of canine osteoarthritis is a useful referee here, because it grades both conventional staples and more holistic-adjacent options on the same evidence scale rather than picking a side. Some interventions that read as “conventional” — certain omega-3 formulations — come out with reasonably consistent supportive data. Some that read as “holistic,” like specific curcumin extracts studied alongside glucosamine and chondroitin, show promising signal in newer work but still need more independent replication in dogs before I’d call the case closed.

That’s basically how I sort a supplement drawer for my own patients. I do not care which label a product wears. I want the dose named, the delivery form matched to how the dog will actually take it — a good comparison of chew, powder, and liquid supplement formats is worth reading before you buy any of them — and, if the claim is about a condition rather than general support, I want at least one dog study behind it, not just a mechanism story borrowed from a human paper.

The owners I see most often aren’t choosing between holistic and conventional as identities. They’re choosing between a bottle that names its dose and cites a dog study, and one that doesn’t. That’s the only line that’s ever mattered to me in twelve years of practice.

I’ll say this plainly because I think it gets lost in the marketing: I will not promise a supplement will fix a dog’s gait, and neither camp should be promising that either, holistic or conventional — the data supports “may help reduce discomfort in some dogs at an effective dose,” and that’s the sentence I actually stand behind. If a gut issue is part of the picture, the same logic applies to probiotics — the gap between prescription veterinary probiotics and over-the-counter options is about strain identity and colony-forming-unit counts, not which aisle the product came from.

The bottom line

Pick the practitioner whose reasoning you can follow, then hold the product to the same two questions regardless of which label they hand you: is the dose named and does it match a dog study, and is the manufacturer’s quality verifiable. Everything else is packaging.
