A twelve-week-old rescue named Junip taught me to stop treating “ashwagandha” as a single ingredient. Her owner had already been giving her a bulk root powder scooped from a bag meant for horses, diluted by guesswork, because a forum thread said it would calm her thunderstorm panic. Nothing had changed after six weeks. When we switched the conversation to what was actually in that scoop, neither of us could say — no withanolide percentage, no lot testing, no way to know if she’d gotten an active dose or inert root fiber. That gap between “ashwagandha” as a plant and ashwagandha as a measured input is the entire comparison this article is built on.

What withanolides are actually doing

Ashwagandha’s relevant activity traces back to withanolides, the steroidal lactones concentrated in the root. The distinction matters physiologically before it matters practically: the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the feedback loop that governs cortisol release in response to a perceived threat, doesn’t respond to “ashwagandha” as a category. It responds to a withanolide load large enough and consistent enough to nudge that loop toward baseline. A powder with an unlabeled, variable withanolide concentration may deliver a therapeutic dose on one scoop and a fraction of one the next.

KSM-66 is a proprietary full-spectrum root extract standardized to a fixed withanolide percentage, manufactured through an aqueous extraction process rather than the alcohol or hydro-alcoholic methods some competing extracts use. Regular ashwagandha powder is just dried, ground root — no standardization step, no guaranteed withanolide content on the label unless a manufacturer chooses to test and disclose it. Where the counterargument actually lands

I want to be fair to the powder camp, because their argument isn’t nothing: whole-root products retain the full phytochemical matrix — the sitoindosides, the trace alkaloids, the fiber-bound compounds that get processed out during standardized extraction. Some owners and even some herbalists argue that isolating and concentrating withanolides strips away synergistic effects that make the whole root work the way traditional Ayurvedic use suggests it should. It’s a plausible mechanism, and I don’t dismiss it outright.

But plausible isn’t the same as demonstrated, and for a dog, where I can’t ask about subjective calm the way a human trial can ask a participant, I need the dosing precision that standardization provides. The NCCIH review of ashwagandha’s usefulness and safety notes that most of the clinical evidence supporting stress and anxiety outcomes comes from trials using standardized extracts with defined withanolide content — not from unstandardized whole-root preparations. When the evidence base is built on measured extract, applying it to an unmeasured powder is an extrapolation, not a citation.

I saw this play out with a nine-year-old miniature schnauzer named Pretzel, twenty-two pounds, whose owner had tried three different bagged ashwagandha powders over eight months chasing a fix for her noise sensitivity during summer construction next door. Nothing was consistent — some batches seemed to help for a week, others did nothing at all. When we talked through it, I asked her to bring in the labels. None listed a withanolide percentage. We switched to a standardized extract dosed by her weight, and within three weeks her owner reported Pretzel could stay on the couch through hammering next door instead of pacing to the bathroom, her usual hiding spot. I can’t call that a trial outcome — it’s one dog, one household, one season — but it’s exactly the pattern I’d expect if the earlier powders were simply underdosed.

We eventually moved Junip onto a standardized extract dosed conservatively for her size, and her thunderstorm reactivity softened over about six weeks — fewer episodes of drooling and pacing, more time spent in her crate instead of wedged behind the toilet. Again, one dog, not a study. But I no longer recommend unstandardized bulk powder to a client who’s serious about addressing a stress response, because I can’t tell them what dose they’re actually giving, and neither can they. If a product can’t state its withanolide percentage, I treat it as an unknown quantity, not a gentler option. The evidence base for ashwagandha’s effect on the HPA axis was built on standardized material, and I’m not willing to apply that evidence to a bag of ground root that was never tested against it.
