Magnesium Versus L-Theanine for a Hyperactive Dog at Bedtime

Is your dog circling the bedroom at 11pm, pacing past the water bowl, resettling three times before finally sighing into the dog bed? I get some version of this question almost every week in my practice, usually from an owner who has already tried a calming chew from the pet store and is now standing in the supplement aisle trying to choose between a magnesium product and an L-theanine product, with no real sense of what either one is doing inside their dog.

One of the dogs I worked with was a nine-year-old Border Collie mix named Sadie, fifty-two pounds, who’d developed a bedtime pacing habit over about six weeks that her owner traced back to a change in her evening walk schedule — shorter walks after a knee scare, then a dog who couldn’t seem to power down at 10pm no matter how tired she looked at dinner. The owner had tried a lavender spray, then a chamomile chew, and had landed on wanting to know, specifically, whether magnesium or L-theanine was the more defensible choice before she spent another month experimenting. That’s the question worth answering carefully, because these two supplements aren’t interchangeable, and picking blind wastes weeks a restless dog and a tired owner don’t have.

What magnesium is actually doing in a stressed dog

Magnesium is a cofactor in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, and it plays a direct role in regulating NMDA receptor activity in the nervous system — in plain terms, it helps dampen excitatory signaling rather than promoting it. That’s the mechanistic case for using it around arousal and restlessness: a dog running low on magnesium may have less buffering against overstimulation, not more of a calming ceiling.

The mineral-status side of this has some real, if limited, data behind it. A pilot study published on PubMed tracked serum magnesium in guide-dog candidates and found that levels dropped during elementary training classes — the unfamiliar, higher-stress phase — compared to advanced training, and that treadmill exercise and winter cold produced similar drops. The researchers weren’t testing magnesium supplementation as a treatment; they were documenting that stress and exertion measurably move magnesium levels in dogs, which is a different, more modest claim than “give magnesium and your dog will settle.” I want to be honest about that gap, because it’s exactly where marketing tends to overreach.

For dosing, magnesium glycinate is generally cited in the range of roughly 50–100mg daily for dogs under 25 pounds, 100–200mg for dogs 25–50 pounds, and 200–300mg for dogs over 50 pounds, with the glycinate form generally favored over magnesium oxide for gut tolerance. I’d treat those as starting-point ranges to discuss with your own vet, not a fixed protocol — dogs with kidney disease in particular need magnesium handled carefully, since impaired kidneys can’t clear excess as efficiently.

Where L-theanine’s evidence actually stands

L-theanine is an amino acid, most familiar from green tea, and it’s believed to work by increasing alpha-brain-wave activity and supporting GABA, serotonin, and dopamine signaling — a different lever than magnesium’s receptor-level dampening. It’s the active ingredient behind Anxitane, the branded product most of the published dog studies are built around.

Here’s where I land after reading the actual trials rather than the summaries: the evidence is real but thin. An open-label study on storm-sensitive dogs, described in coverage from ScienceDirect, reported improvement in global anxiety scores and faster return to baseline after storms, with high reported success rates for specific behaviors like drooling and pacing. That sounds compelling until you notice the design — no placebo group, no blinding, owner-reported outcomes over a few weeks. A more skeptical review from SkeptVet points out that most of the L-theanine literature has small samples (one key study had only ten dogs), was funded by the product’s manufacturer, and hasn’t consistently shown a difference between L-theanine and control groups when behavior modification was included in both arms. Dosing in the commercial product runs roughly 25mg twice daily for dogs under 10kg, 50mg twice daily for 10–25kg, and 100mg twice daily for dogs over 25kg.

I’m not dismissing L-theanine — plausible mechanism, low apparent risk, and some owners report a real difference. But “might help, probably doesn’t hurt” is a different claim than the confident bedtime-calm promise on a lot of packaging, and I’d rather an owner know that going in.

The counterargument, and why I still lean toward magnesium first

The strongest case against my own lean here is straightforward: L-theanine has more dog-specific clinical literature behind it, even if that literature is methodologically weak, than magnesium does for behavioral use in dogs. Someone could reasonably argue that “more studies, even flawed ones” beats “one pilot study about stress markers, not treatment.” I take that seriously — it’s not a throwaway objection.

Where I still land is this: my training leans hard on whole-patient balance rather than reaching for a single calming agent, and magnesium’s role as a foundational mineral cofactor — something a stressed, active, or aging dog can genuinely run short on — fits that frame better than treating restlessness as a problem to suppress with a novel compound. In Tui-na and acupuncture work, we’re often addressing a dog whose whole system is wound tight, not just one symptom at bedtime, and magnesium’s broader physiological role (muscle relaxation, nerve conduction, sleep-adjacent enzymatic pathways) tends to support that whole-body approach better than a single-mechanism amino acid aimed narrowly at anxiety. That’s a clinical judgment call, not a settled fact, and I’d genuinely respect a colleague who prioritized the L-theanine literature instead.

With Sadie, we started by ruling out an orthopedic pain driver for the pacing — her knee scare mattered here — added a magnesium glycinate supplement at a conservative dose, and kept her evening walk consistent in length even after the knee concern resolved. Within about three weeks her owner reported she was settling within one cycle of pacing instead of three or four. That’s one dog’s timeline, not a study result, and I want to be clear it doesn’t prove magnesium was the deciding factor over the walk consistency or the pain workup — but it’s the kind of pattern that keeps me starting there.

Reading the label either way

Whichever route you take, the guaranteed analysis matters more than the front-of-label claim. Look for the actual elemental magnesium dose per serving, not just “magnesium glycinate” listed with no milligram figure — the same applies to L-theanine products, where “proprietary calming blend” without a stated dose tells you nothing you can act on. A product carrying the NASC quality seal has passed a third-party audit on manufacturing and labeling accuracy, which is worth something, but it’s a process certification, not proof the formula works for your dog’s specific restlessness.

My honest bottom line: start with magnesium glycinate at a conservative, weight-appropriate dose if your dog’s bedtime restlessness looks more like an overstimulated, can’t-power-down pattern than a specific fear or phobia response, and reserve L-theanine for dogs whose restlessness is clearly anxiety-driven — storms, separation, a specific trigger — since that’s the population the existing trials actually studied, thin as they are. Either way, rule out pain and confirm the dose on the label before you decide the supplement failed.
